billions of worlds

Our own little worlds

We each live in our own little worlds, even when we chose to deny it. As irritating as it can be to others, the writer has the advantage in that his or her little world can become the next best seller. Have you ever considered the extent of imagination that has brought us our great works of fiction? In this hub I hope to offer some tips on creating those fascinating places that have charmed and alarmed us.

Cosmology

Where did it all begin? Even in our own world we can’t agree. A fictional world need not follow the same guidelines as our own. A world may have popped into existence from a thought or maybe there really was an intelligent designer. Perhaps things take a humorous turn with an unintelligent designer. Begin your world with a committee of super beings or perhaps a lonely, capricious god.

Myths

A myth can arise from a real event that was transformed through the ages. Myths are a useful device in character development, don’t leave them out. I recommend studying myths from all over the world for inspiration.

The Map

One of the most fun, yet challenging aspects of creating another world is the map. Fortunately it can be changed in the process of writing. A map will help you reference where your characters are from and where they’re going. It will help you keep track of place names and help you with developing the story line.
